Natalie Avery earned her MFA in Film Studies at the University of Utah in May 2004. Avery has a passion for documentary filmmaking that explores social and political issues.
Her first documentary film, An Extraordinary Family, was featured in the Tucson International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and was a semi-finalist for the Making Waves Festival in New York City.
In 2008 KUED aired Outside is her first indepent feature film on LGBT homeless youth in Salt Lake City. Outside earned a regional Emmy for Best Topical Documentary at the the 2009 Rocky Mountain Emmy Awards.
