The UMFA is honored to curate and premiere this extraordinary exhibition of American Indian art from the John and Marva Warnock Collection. Splendid Heritage: Perspectives on American Indian Artwill present 144 objects of unique artistry and powerful cultural expression from the Native people of the Plains, Plateau and Northeast.

Museums traditionally interpret this type of material by emphasizing either the cultural context or fine arts context.Splendid Heritage, however, has been curated to examine the objects from both perspectives – the intersection of culture and art – to uncover a richer narrative about the material and enhance the viewer's understanding.

To accomplish this goal, the UMFA enlisted the assistance of Emma Hanson, senior curator of the Plains Indian Museum, Buffalo Bill Historical Center, to write about the objects from a cultural perspective. Bernadette Brown, curator of African, Oceanic and New World art at the UMFA will examine the objects from an artistic perspective.

Families will enjoy the exhibition with interactive lift panels containing questions and answers written for a younger audience, along with hands-on stations and a make-and-take table for children. A free family guide and specially designedSplendid Heritagefamily backpack is also available to visitors.

In addition, the exhibition will contain an interactive kiosk with curatorial highlights from the collection and a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creation ofSplendid Heritage.Podcast interviews with the exhibition curators may be downloaded and brought to the exhibition, and beginning February 10, MP3 players will be available from the UMFA's front desk.
