George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation

Online: See our website!

The dream of George and Dolores Doré Eccles in establishing their Foundation was to improve the quality of life enjoyed by the people of Utah. That purpose remains unchanged today. Each year, the Foundation grants nearly $30 million to assist organizations statewide in making a meaningful difference in the lives of Utahns. That legacy lives on, in part, through KUED.

Over the years, the Foundation’s investment of resources in KUED has been substantial. The Foundation has been a stalwart supporter of KUED’s local production efforts for more than two decades, from arts and performance specials to historical documentaries. Most recently, the Foundation provided support for Maynard Dixon: To the Desert Again, for KUED’s historic Utah World War II Stories series, and has provided annual support for the Christmas With the Mormon Tabernacle Choir series, which airs nationally on PBS each December.

The Foundation recently pledged to KUED a very generous $1.2 million matching grant to convert its broadcasting and production resources to digital technology. The funding provides seed money to purchase standard and high-definition digital production equipment, to develop KUED’s multicasting capability, and to support a complete archive transfer of KUED’s rich library of local productions. This transition to digital technology is the largest, most expensive technological challenge in the station’s history.

The end result of this transition will transform the viewing experience for each KUED viewer. It will provide easier-to-access programming, both to viewers and to schools and universities throughout Utah. It will also continue KUED’s long tradition of excellence in telling Utah’s stories through long-form documentaries, a vital educational and information resource unavailable from any other television station in Utah.

The resources the Foundation invests in KUED and in other Utah organizations will renew themselves again and again, creating ever more vibrant communities. Through this philosophy, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles legacy will continue, together . . . weaving dreams into triumphs.
