The Masonic Foundation of Utah is the charitable arm of the Grand Lodge Free and Accepted Masons of Utah. Each year, the foundation awards nearly $250,000 in scholarships and grants to charitable organizations in Utah. The mission of Freemasonry in Utah is to teach and perpetuate a way of life that promotes brotherhood and self-improvement through education, family values, moral standards, charity, and community involvement.

Blaine Simons, grand secretary for the foundation, says the Masonic Foundation of Utah takes its mission seriously. "Education is at the center of Masonry," said Simons. "We have stressed its importance for a long time. Back in the Middle Ages, schools were often held in the lodges of stonemasons. Masons started some of the first public schools in both Europe and America. In the 1800s, Masons as a group lobbied for the establishment of state-supported education and federal land-grant colleges."

Simons also explained that Masonry is deeply involved with helping people. Nationally, Masonic organizations spend more than $1.4 million every day, "just to make life a little easier." Some of the organizations that benefit from the Masons' generosity include children's hospitals and burn institutes built by the Shriners, as well as a nationwide network of more than 100 Childhood Language Disorders Clinics.

For more than 20 years, we have maintained a strong commitment to KUED," Simons commented. "We see it as a partnership between public television and The Masonic Foundation of Utah, working together to serve our community."
