Using quarters left over from an untapped polio vaccine fund, the Utah Medical Association Foundation (UMAF) was formed in 1963, to support projects that improve the health and healthcare for Utah citizens.

With a budget that has grown from $250,000 to more than $3 million today, the 10-member trustee board of the UMAF “extends the reach of the healer’s hand,” in the form of generous contributions. The Foundation strives to improve and support education of physicians and nurses; to improve facilities and treatment options; and to support public health projects that serve to mitigate or prevent disease—all specifically for the benefit of the citizens of Utah.

During the past, the UMAF has made possible the production of several health-related local documentaries on KUED. These include The Journey Home, a candid look at hospice and end-of-life care in Utah; Transplanting Miracles: The Donor Crisis, raising public awareness about organ donation; and Remembering David, which chronicles the last months of a prominent AIDS educator’s life and his struggle to promote awareness about the disease.

The Foundation has also provided funding for KUED’s Health Matters initiative, which explores a variety of health and wellness issues through national and local television programs, outreach activities and community resources This initiative offers things like television programs, free community workshops and resource materials on caregiving and Alzheimer’s disease. As one viewer commented, “It was such a good program—full of information that we really need to know.” Many other viewers have expressed their appreciation for the valuable information these resources bring to the community.

Through the power of television, the Utah Medical Association Foundation is truly “extending the reach of the healer’s hand.”
