If asked to describe Utah Food Services, anyone familiar with the company would no doubt include the word "flexible." As a company that offers full-service catering for groups from two to 12,000 people, flexibility is a key element to the success of this catering service, whose revenue has grown more than 1,200 percent since 1994--the year that Robert and Susan Sullivan purchased the business.

"Robert vowed to do things his way, proving over time that a company that cares for its employees, as well as its clients, will prevail in a competitive marketplace," said Kate Sullivan, director of marketing at Utah Food Services.

Sullivan said Utah Food Services' outreach program provides employment opportunities for the mentally/physically challenged, individuals in recovery programs, retirees, youth groups and political refugees. "Building self-confidence and believing in each individuals' potential and creative spirit starts from the top down," she added.

According to Sullivan, the success of the company's "can do...make it so" philosophy depends on the dedication of its staff. "In an ever-changing and fast-paced work environment, employee attitudes can make or break an event," she said. A case in point is KUED's highly successful Speaking of Women's Health event, for which Utah Food Services has provided the lunch, as well as the kick-off luncheon, for many years.

In 2006, UFS received the Alfred P. Sloan Award for Business Excellence in Workplace Flexibility. UFS was one of 10 Utah companies chosen for this award.
