Digital Translators

If you live beyond the Wasatch Front and you watch KUED and other Utah television channels through a translator, digital TV may or may not be in your area now. Check below to find out if your area has digital TV over the air.

Translator TowerThe FCC has mandated that all television stations turn off their primary analog transmitters on June 12, 2009 and from then on broadcast only digital signals. However, this date does not apply to rural analog translators. Viewers outside the Wasatch Front will receive digital service at a different date.

KUED has launched an aggressive plan to establish digital translators throughout the state. Some communities already receive KUED's digital service thanks to grants from the Utah State Legislature and the federal government. Our plans call for the installation of additional digital translators during the summer months 2009. Check the status of digital service in your community by visiting this page or by contacting KUED's Technical Services Department at 801-585-5987.

During the transition period, television reception in your community may depend on both analog and digital translators. If you plan to purchase a new digital television set, be certain that it will receive both analog and digital signals. If you plan on purchasing a digital converter box for your analog television set, we recommend one that will also pick up analog signals. A list of those boxes is available at www.ntiadtv.gov/cecb_list.cfm. The boxes marked with an asterisk will receive both digital and analog signals. Call KUED viewer services at 581-3064 for more information. Do you have cable or satellite? Your provider will continue to deliver KUED's programming to you without any further action on your part no matter where you live. Check with your provider if you have questions!

New digital television sets and converter boxes identify over the air signals automatically as part of the initial setup. As new digital translators come on line in your area, you will need to “scan for channels” again to receive them on your set. Check your owner manual for instructions.
