PBS Special Report On Health Care Reform

THE NIGHTLY BUSINESS REPORT, NOW ON PBS and TAVIS SMILEY collaborate to provide a 90-minute program that examines the urgent topic of healthcare reform. As Congress weighs legislation to provide universal healthcare in the U.S., correspondents will provide analysis, discussion, insight and engagement. THE NIGHTLY BUSINESS REPORT team will examine the costs and controversies of employer-provided healthcare. NOW ON PBS correspondents will consider how reform may change the way we live. Tavis Smiley will investigate the issue of childhood obesity.

Join KUED, the SLC Film Center, and the Utah Health Policy Project at the Utah Museum of Fine Arts for a live broadcast and panel discussion of PBS Special Report on Healthcare Reform at 7:00 pm.

Seating begins at 6:30 pm.

Rules for discussion will be addressed prior to the screening event and before the panel - Index cards for questions will be handed out at the Auditorium door.

This panel program audio will be recorded for podcast at a later date.

  • Judi Hilman, Executive Director Utah Health Policy Project
    Judi is Executive Director and co-founder of the Utah Health Policy Project, a 501-c 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating quality, affordable healthcare coverage for all Utahns. more »
  • Brent James, MD, Executive Director, Institute for Healthcare Delivery and Research Intermountain Healthcare
    • Brent James is known internationally for his work in clinical quality improvement, patient safety, and the infrastructure that underlies successful improvement efforts, such as culture change, data systems, payment methods, and management roles.
    • He is a member of the National Academy of Science's Institute of Medicine (and participated in many of that organization's seminal works on quality and patient safety).
    • He is a Fellow of the American College of Physician Executives.
    • He holds faculty appointments at the:
      -University of Utah School of Medicine (Family Medicine and Biomedical Informatics),
      -Harvard School of Public Health (Health Policy and Management), and the
      -University of Sydney, Australia, School of Public Health
    • He is he Chief Quality Officer, and Executive Director, Institute for Health Care Delivery Research at Intermountain Healthcare
  • Laura Polacheck, Associate Director, AARP Utah AARP Utah
    As an associate state director for AARP Utah, Laura Polacheck coordinates and implements the state's advocacy efforts on consumer, health, and economic issues, and assists in the development and presentation of educational outreach programs. Prior to coming to Utah, she was a senior legislative representative for the Department of State Affairs of AARP in Washington DC, where she analyzed legislation and regulatory proposals, drafted legislative testimony and comments, and assisted in the development of the Association's policies on a variety of consumer protection issues. Prior to joining the AARP, Ms. Polacheck was a staff attorney with the Center for Auto Safety, a consumer protection organization founded by Consumers Union. She has also served as a project attorney for the Sierra Club Legal Defense Fund and as an attorney-advisor for the Food and Drug Administration. Ms. Polacheck was a member of the Steering Committee for the Antitrust, Trade Regulation, and Consumer Affairs Section of the District of Columbia Bar, and served as Co-Chair of the Section. Ms. Polacheck received her undergraduate degree with honors from the University of Wisconsin, and a law degree from the George Washington University Law School.
  • Fahina Tavake-Pasi, Executive Director National Tongan-American Association
    Fahina Tavake Pasi, Executive Director, National Tongan-American Association
    Fahina worked in the Pacific Islander (PI) community for over 20 years in various capacities. For 6 years she recruited Pacific Islanders for jobs, over 7 years she did PI outreach projects for school districts and local organizations, over 9 years as an Academic Advisor for Pacific Islanders for the University of Utah, and is currently the Executive Director for the National Tongan American Society.
    Fahina sits on various local and national boards/committees including Martin Luther King Commission, Multicultural Legal Board, Utah Diabetes Prevention and Control Program Committee, Arthritis Committee, Multicultural Health Network, is the Chairperson for the National Diabetes Education Program (NDEP) workgroup for Asian Pacific Islander which operates under NIH and CDC, and is current secretary for the American Public Health Association - Asian Pacific Islander Caucus. Her main interest centers around health disparities in the Pacific Islander community, more specifically, her area of interest is diabetes and obesity.
  • Norman Waitzman, M.D., Professor University of Utah, Department of Economics
    Norman Waitzman is a Professor of economics, and co-director of the Behavioral Science and Health Program at the University of Utah;   A health economist, his main areas of research have been in two ares, first ,the cost of illness, with a special focus on congenital conditions and preterm birth; and second, on the relationship between socioeconomic status and health.   He has periodically published on health care reform.   Some of his recent appointments have been as the health economist on an expert panel  advising a special UN Commission regarding public health damages related to first Iraq - Kuwait War, and on the Institute of Medicine Panel on the Causes and Condquences of Preterm Birth in the United States.
