A new season of Masterpiece Mystery! premieres July 1 at 8:00 p.m. with “Endeavour,” a 1960s prequel to the popular Inspector Morse series. Before Inspector Morse, there was the rookie Constable Morse, fed up with police work and ready to nip his career in the bud by handing in his resignation. That is, until a murder turned up that only he could solve. Shaun Evans (The Take, The Virgin Queen) stars as the young Endeavour Morse, before his signature red Jaguar, but with his deductive powers already running in high gear.

Join Inspector Lewis and his young partner DS Hathaway as they solve cases in the seemingly perfect academic haven of Oxford in “Inspector Lewis, Series V.” Kevin Whately stars as Inspector Lewis and Laurence Fox as Hathaway in this popular detective series.

The series begins with “The Soul of Genius” on July 8. When the body of an obsessive Oxford English professor is discovered ritually buried, Lewis and Hathaway are set upon a seemingly impossible quest to uncover the truth. The detectives soon find that multiple riddles are in need of solving — from an intellectual rivalry with the professor’s brother to an amateur detective’s incessant meddling.

In “Generation of Vipers” on July 15, Lewis and Hathaway investigate the death of a lovelorn Oxford professor. Was her death caused by an embarrassing Internet leak or something much more sinister?

See the dark side of Oxford as Lewis and Hathaway investigate the murder of a suburban babysitter on “Fearful Symmetry,” airing July 22. Will the babysitter’s secret life help the detectives unravel a tangled web of lies and deceit to find their killer?

The sleuths investigate the strangling of a controversial American Guest lecturer at Oxford in “The Indelible Stain” on July 29.
