Described by The New York Times as "captivating and proudly bombastic," the record-breaking and award-winning Video Games Live proves how culturally significant and artistically powerful video games -- and their music -- have become. Performing sold-out concerts around the globe, Video Games Live has been thrilling gamers, families and mainstream audiences since its premiere at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles in 2005.
The hit concert, composed and produced by Tommy Tallarico and Jack Wall, joins symphony orchestras with the music from video games. Tallarico and Wall, who are both gaming industry veterans and video game score composers, tour the country conducting local orchestras and philharmonics to perform their highly innovative shows.
Now, Video Games Live and PBS have joined forces, creating a 90-minute special performance, Video Games Live, airing Tuesday, August 3 at 7:00 p.m. on KUED. The production will come to Salt Lake City to perform with the Utah Symphony.
"It's turning people on to a whole new genre of music they didn't know anything about," says creator Tommy Tallarico. "Parents come up to me after and say they didn't think they would ever get their kids to be excited about a symphony concert."
It features music from video games from all eras, such as Final Fantasy, Halo, World of Warcraft, Sonic the Hedgehog, The Legend of Zelda and Metal Gear Solid, as well as retro arcade games such as Tetris and Asteroids. A spectacular light show and original footage from the video games is shown during the performance. Video Games Live also interacts with the audience. Ralph Baer, 88 year-old inventor of Pong, plays Pong against an audience member while the orchestra provides the music.
"I'm hoping that this project will have a positive impact on the perception of video games by the non-gaming world," said Tallarico. "The goal was to create a show for everyone, whether they play games or not."
