Precocious yet lovable Anne Shirley returns to public television during an encore presentation of Anne of Green Gables, a classic television series airing on KUED-Channel 7 Sunday, August 5, at 6 p.m. that chronicles the trials and tribulations of a young orphan girl navigating her way through life.  Based on the 1908 novel by Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery, the story's fairytale charm, emotional power and endless wit has made it a fixture in children's libraries around the world for nearly a century. The drama first premiered on public television in 1986 and garnered several prestigious awards, including an Emmy Award for Outstanding Children's Program, nine Academy of Canadian Cinema and TV Gemini Awards, a Peabody Award, and TV Guide's Most Popular Program for 1986. The show begins when Marilla and Matthew of Green Gables send for a boy orphan to help them out at their farm, but mistakenly get Anne Shirley, a feisty, independent but warm-hearted girl.  But not a day goes by without some memorable adventure or prank in the tragicomedy of her life. The longer Anne remains, the harder it is for the brother and sister to imagine Green Gables without her.  Anne meets Gilbert in school and their battle of wills turns to affection as the pair became fast friends.  Matthew suffers a fatal heart attack and Anne makes a decision to take care of Marilla. Anne of Green Gables – The Sequel

Anne of Avonlea – the sequel to the beloved children’s story – takes up soon after Matthew’s death, when Anne has graduated from college.   It follows her struggles and adventures as an aspiring writer and English teacher in a private school on the mainland.

The sequel, airing Saturday, August 11, at 6 p.m., is filled with themes parents can discuss with their daughters – including self-reliance, generosity and perseverance.  It also gives a realistic portrayal of the situation for women during this historical period, through characters that are multifaceted and human.

Anne’s struggle to find her voice as a writer, to handle difficult people maturely, to stay optimistic despite setbacks, and to nurture her students, are both thought-provoking and entertaining.  Viewers will follow Anne’s romantic travails, as she tries to decide between two suitors: her childhood friend, Gilbert, and a rich, handsome, and mysterious widower.

Anne of Green Gables airs on KUED-Channel 7 Sunday, August 5, at 6 p.m.  The sequel airs Saturday, August 11, at 6 p.m.
