KUED proudly presents A Cathedral Christmas, a glorious performance of traditional carols filmed in Salt Lake City's historic Cathedral of the Madeleine. The program features the combined voices of the Cathedral Choir and the Choristers of the Madeleine Choir School conducted by Gregory Glenn.
The Cathedral, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, combines predominately Romanesque exterior with Gothic interior. A major renovation of the interior during 1991-92 included restoration of the art, stained glass and woodwork. "The Cathedral provides a glorious backdrop for a the magical performance," says KUED's senior producer of arts programs, John Howe.
Angelic voices in the candle-lit backdrop of the Cathedral sing traditional works such as "Rorate Coeli," "O Come, O Come Emmanuel," "Adam Lay Ybounden," "Hark! A Thrilling Voice is Sounding," "Ave Virgo Sanctissima," "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," "Infant Holy, Infant Lowly," "The Sussex Carol," "O Little Town of Bethlehem," "O Magnum Mysterium," "Hodie Christus Natus Est," "O Come, All Ye Faithful" and "The First Nowell."
The Cathedral Choir sings on most Sundays of the year between September and mid-June at the 11 a.m. mass. Gregory Glenn has been the director of the Choir School since its establishment in 1996, and he recently accompanied the students on a performance tour of Rome, Vatican City, Florence and Siena. The student choristers have been also been involved in performances with Utah Opera, Ballet West, Children's Dance Theater, The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and the San Francisco Opera.
A Cathedral Christmas is made possible by generous grants from The R. Harold Burton Foundation and The C. Comstock Clayton Foundation.
