The University of Utah is seeking an innovative and entrepreneurial Director to lead its Center for High Performance Computing (CHPC). CHPC is a unit of University Information Technology (UIT) with cross-reporting and significant funding through the Office of the Vice President for Research. CHPC is a long-standing research support unit of the University that offers high performance computing, research data storage and analytics (including provision for protected data), natural language processing (NLP), and other research collaboration services to the faculty, students, and other researchers at the University and their collaborators. CHPC has access to significant dedicated space and electric power (over 1.1 Megawatts) in the UIT Downtown Data Center (DDC). CHPC collaborates closely with the Utah Education Network (UEN), which operates a modern optical network connecting the campus to the DDC and national networks such as the Internet2 Network and NOAA’s N-Wave. CHPC is an active participant within the emerging Condo of Condos national consortium, XSEDE Campus Champions, CASC, Internet2, GENI, Utah EPSCoR, the Rocky Mountain Advanced Computing Consortium, and the annual SCxy conference. Of note, SC16 is expected to return to Salt Lake City in November 2016.


The Director is a senior research computing management position responsible for developing the facility and creating an effective management structure that promotes the adoption of innovative research computing, a nimble academic service environment, and ongoing professional development among the staff. The Director should possess a broad understanding of research computing technologies, trends, and current best practices and how they apply to a large spectrum of research fields, ranging from basic physical sciences to biomedical applications to computational humanities. She/he will foster collaborative partnerships with faculty across the University to enhance the computational research infrastructure of the entire campus. The Director will oversee the CHPC staff and advocate for creative uses of the facility. The Director will be expected to participate on a regular basis in external funding proposals, both with University faculty members leading and as project lead as appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Business Administration, or related area, or equivalency (2 years of related experience is equivalent to 1 year of education). Eight years of progressively more responsible management experience; a minimum of five years of progressive leadership experience in high performance research computing, and strong collaborative skills as demonstrated through leadership of scientific or computational partnerships.

Master’s degree (Ph.D. strongly preferred) or equivalent research training in computer science or a computationally intensive science or engineering discipline. Successful proposal writing and collaboration experience with diverse faculty teams is highly desirable. Previous research computing experience in an academic setting or other research environment also is highly desirable.
