Missy's Dandelions

Email share

Hey, hey! My name is Missy. I’m an artist and an arts and crafts blogger here at PBS KIDS Utah. My favorite flower has always been the dandelion. A weed to most, but I think they are a beautiful, resilient burst of sunshine. I’m sure you’ve picked them before. I bet you’ve also noticed they don’t last long as a bouquet. The solution is making fake dandelions, here’s how.

Supplies

  • Green pipe cleaners
  • Green and yellow yarn
  • Scissors
  • Wire cutters
  • A fork
  • A vase

Instructions

  1. Use your wire cutters to cut your pipe cleaners in half.
  2. Take one and tie the end of your yellow yarn near the end of the pipe cleaner.
  3. Hold this against your fork with the end of the tines matched up with the end of the pipe cleaner with the yarn tied on it.
  4. Wrap the yarn around the fork and pipe cleaner 25 times.
  5. Use your scissors to cut the yarn. Hold it steady so it doesn’t unwind from the fork.
  6. Cut a 3 inch piece of yellow yarn and thread it through the first and second fork tine. Make a knot with this yarn around all yarn you wound. Tie it as tightly as you can.
  7. Now slip the yarn off the fork and set it aside. The yellow yarn is the flower, the green pipe cleaner is the stem.
  8. Bend the end of the pipe cleaner down and line it up with the long stem.
  9. Now take the green yarn and tie the end around the last knot you made.
  10. Wrap the green yarn around the base of the flower, leaving the end loose, and over the bent part of the pipe cleaner.
  11. Once that area is covered, cut the end of the green yarn and tie it to the loose end.
  12. Use your scissors to cut the loops of the yellow flower. Trim the ends to make them all even.
