Have you experienced missing a name when talking with a friend on the phone, or not clearly hearing your doctor’s office when they were calling to confirm an appointment time? If you have trouble hearing the person on the other end of the line, you are not alone. The good news, there is help.
Relay Utah, a state program managed by the Utah Public Service Commission, provides hearing assistive phones to hard-of-hearing and deaf Utahns. Thousands of people throughout our state are able to live more independently using these hearing assistive phones.
Available Phones From Relay Utah
There are several types of phones available to meet a variety of hearing needs, some of these include:
- Jitterbug® cell phone. Designed specifically with the senior user in mind, its large, backlit buttons are easy to see in both dim and bright lights. Simplified “yes” and “no” key commands make answering and making calls easy.
- Amplified Talking Telephone for Visually/Hearing Impaired.With large buttons, an LCD display and voice announcements, this phone is for hard of hearing individuals that are also blind or have partial sight.
- CapTel®.This phone amplifies sound and captions and displays the text of the caller’s conversation on an LCD display.
- Amplified Phones.Increases volume and has an anti-feedback filter eliminates feedback and distortion, even with hearing aids.
Requesting A Phone For Your Home
To request a phone, download the application available on the Relay Utah website, www.relayutah.gov. A Relay representative to go out to your home and have you try several phones to see which one best fits your particular hearing needs.
Phones are available at no cost to Utahns who qualify for some type of Public Assistance Program and meet disability guidelines. More detailed information about these guidelines are on the Relay Utah website at www.relayutah.gov under the “Qualify” tab.
