In 2016 Ruben Zendejas became a Dreamstarter with a grant funded by Running Strong for American Indian Youth. Running Strong is a foundation started by Billy Mills, a Gold Medalist in the 1964 Olympics and a member of the Ogalala Sioux Nation. With the grant, the goals are to help the Native youth in the community gain confidence and help build cultural identity, educate teachers on the Native American Culture, and to bring the community together through a Native American Powwow.
The hope is people who attend the Powwow will leave knowing a little more, and have a better understanding of the Native culture. To help do that, the event will sponsor Edouardo Zendejas and Gary Farmer to serve as the emcees for the event. Edouardo is a tribal judge for the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska, as well as a professor at the University of Nebraska Omaha. Edouardo is a member of the Omaha Tribe of Nebraska. Gary Farmer is a musician and actor who has had roles in movies such as “Smoke Signals” and “Powwow Highway.”
