It’s hard to believe, but Sesame Street turned 40 this month. The world’s largest informal children’s educator series debuted on television four decades ago, becoming a staple for generations of children and their families. As it marks its 40th year, the groundbreaking children’s program that began as an experiment has evolved and continues to grow with children and their changing needs.
Sesame Street now has a new block format, new show open, and new nature curriculum. While maintaining its emphasis on the importance of literacy and numeracy, the series welcomes “My World is Green & Growing,” a two-year science initiative designed to increase positive attitudes towards nature, deepen children’s knowledge about the natural world and encourage behavior that shows respect and care for the environment. For 40 years, PBS has remained the most trusted place on the television dial for kids.
I hope you and the children in your life enjoy all the great children’s programs on KUED. Check out our Kids and Family site at kued.org/kids.

The dream of George and Dolores Doré Eccles in establishing their Foundation was to improve the quality of life enjoyed by the people of Utah. That purpose remains unchanged today. Each year, the Foundation grants nearly $30 million to assist organizations statewide in making a meaningful difference in the lives of Utahns. That legacy lives on, in part, through KUED.
Over the years, the Foundation’s investment of resources in KUED has been substantial. The Foundation has been a stalwart supporter of KUED’s local production efforts for more than two decades, from arts and performance specials to historical documentaries. Most recently, the Foundation provided support for Maynard Dixon: To the Desert Again, for KUED’s historic Utah World War II Stories series, and has provided annual support for the Christmas With the Mormon Tabernacle Choir series, which airs nationally on PBS each December.
The Foundation recently pledged to KUED a very generous $1.2 million matching grant to convert its broadcasting and production resources to digital technology. The funding provides seed money to purchase standard and high-definition digital production equipment, to develop KUED’s multicasting capability, and to support a complete archive transfer of KUED’s rich library of local productions. This transition to digital technology is the largest, most expensive technological challenge in the station’s history.
The end result of this transition will transform the viewing experience for each KUED viewer. It will provide easier-to-access programming, both to viewers and to schools and universities throughout Utah. It will also continue KUED’s long tradition of excellence in telling Utah’s stories through long-form documentaries, a vital educational and information resource unavailable from any other television station in Utah.
The resources the Foundation invests in KUED and in other Utah organizations will renew themselves again and again, creating ever more vibrant communities. Through this philosophy, the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles legacy will continue, together . . . weaving dreams into triumphs.

The UMFA is honored to curate and premiere this extraordinary exhibition of American Indian art from the John and Marva Warnock Collection. Splendid Heritage: Perspectives on American Indian Artwill present 144 objects of unique artistry and powerful cultural expression from the Native people of the Plains, Plateau and Northeast.
Museums traditionally interpret this type of material by emphasizing either the cultural context or fine arts context.Splendid Heritage, however, has been curated to examine the objects from both perspectives – the intersection of culture and art – to uncover a richer narrative about the material and enhance the viewer's understanding.
To accomplish this goal, the UMFA enlisted the assistance of Emma Hanson, senior curator of the Plains Indian Museum, Buffalo Bill Historical Center, to write about the objects from a cultural perspective. Bernadette Brown, curator of African, Oceanic and New World art at the UMFA will examine the objects from an artistic perspective.
Families will enjoy the exhibition with interactive lift panels containing questions and answers written for a younger audience, along with hands-on stations and a make-and-take table for children. A free family guide and specially designedSplendid Heritagefamily backpack is also available to visitors.
In addition, the exhibition will contain an interactive kiosk with curatorial highlights from the collection and a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the creation ofSplendid Heritage.Podcast interviews with the exhibition curators may be downloaded and brought to the exhibition, and beginning February 10, MP3 players will be available from the UMFA's front desk.
A variety of rich interpretive programming will complement the exhibition, including a film and lecture series and family-oriented art making activities. For a complete list ofSplendid Heritageprogramming, please visit our events calendar orSplendid Heritageprogramming page.

KUED, in partnership with the Utah public libraries and community partners, hosts the 17th Annual Reading MarathonNovember 4th, through the 27th. Our goal is to encourage children to read, track their hours, and, in return, they will be invited to the Super Reader Party in January 2010, at the Utah State Fairpark, Grand Building. Our theme is "KUED Kids Village." Martha, Sid, Buddy and other PBS characters will be present to join in on the excitement in January.
Kids may pick up a reading log at their public library or on-line at www.kued.org/reading. Children of pre-school age through sixth grade have different reading goals to meet; details are outlined on the reading log. Participants may read alone, read to someone else, or be read to by another person.
For additional information on KUED's READING MARATHON, call (801) 581-6163 or visit www.kued.org/reading.
