When graduating from Provo Hight School, Gatenby's graduating class picked him "most likely to be an auto mechanic." He grew up in a service station, his father and grandfather both owned and operated service stations. Gatenby Service has been in business in Provo Utah sense 1928. Gatenby worked in the family business for 23 while getting his degree.

In 1993 Motor Magaizine recognized one of Gatenby's patents as One of the Top 20 Tools of the Year.

Gatenby married his bestfriend Cathy and they have two children, Jake and Amanda, whom he loves to travel and vacation with.

At Murry High School Gatenby implemented the AYES program, a program that allows students to work at local dealerships and auto shops as paid interns.
