Scott Chaffin, Program Consultant for KUED-Salt Lake City, has left the station after a public broadcasting career spanning 38 years. He began his career at KUED as a part-time camera operator and studio technician. Over the years he has held a variety of positions including producer/director, Director of Programming and Director of Programming and Production. He was named Director of Broadcasting in 1989.
After semi-retiring in 2009, Chaffin continued to work with KUED on a part-time basis as a programming consultant, which included responsibilities for KUED’s new media activities as well as assisting with the acquisition and scheduling of KUED’s broadcast programs. Chaffin was an integral part of KUED and its success for more than three decades and had a wide-ranging expertise in the public broadcasting industry.
He is a past president and board member of the Public Television Programmers’ Association. He also served on numerous national panels and advisory groups. His tenure on the board of directors of Pacific Islanders in Communication, included terms as vice president and president. He served for two years on the CPB Prime Time Initiative Study Group.
He has been on the editorial selection committee for POV five times, has twice been on the editorial selection committee for the National Endowment for the Humanities, and three times served on the editorial selection committee for ITVS.
When Montana, which had been part of KUED’s coverage area, wanted to form its own PTV station, Chaffin worked out a collaborative two-year plan for the transition, helping the Montana station with program scheduling and fundraising.
He was instrumental in strengthening KUED’s local productions and in planning the Eccles Broadcast Center to house the station and other public broadcasting entities.
When he took over programming, he brought British comedies to the nightly lineup, which became a model for stations around the country. His successful combination of Red Green, Red Dwarf, Dr. Who and Black Adder made KUED’s Saturday night lineup one of the top in the nation. He also was instrumental in making KUED’s Christmas With the Mormon Tabernacle program an annual presentation on PBS.
