What would happen if your dog suddenly were able to talk? Would your pet be anything like Martha, the charming canine with an appetite for life who will make her PBS KIDS debut this fall?
Martha Speaks, the new animated series from the WGBH creators of Curious George and Arthur, premieres on Labor Day, Monday, September 1, at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., on PBS Kids, seen on KUED-Channel 7.
The series stars Martha, a beloved family dog, who accidentally is fed alphabet soup that gives her the power of human speech and the chance to speak her mind to anyone who will listen. Susan Meddaugh, the author and illustrator of the beloved Houghton Mifflin Harcourt book series, serves as a creative producer on the show.
Each episode features two 11-minute stories that showcase Martha's linguistic abilities and the hilarious consequences they provoke - all with a goal of engaging kids and expanding their vocabulary.
Also joining the kids' line-up beginning September 1 is Sid the Science Kid, using comedy to celebrate children's natural curiosity about science and exploring their "Why?" questions in everyday life. Airing weekdays at 7:30 a.m., the program is geared to pre-school-age children, with a math and science focus.
These two new programs join the numerous Emmy Award-winning best children's programs on television. "These programs all have strong educational elements geared to children ranging in age from toddlers to pre-teens," said KUED Station Manager Larry Smith.
The children's line up Monday through Friday includes Super Why, WordWorld, Curious George, Wordgirl, Between the Lions, Reading Rainbow, Fetch! With Ruff Ruffman and Cyberchase. "Many of these programs include educational websites and online activities for children and their parents that extend learning above and beyond on-air programming," said Smith. These websites can be easily accessed through pbskids.org or your kued.org.
