America at a Crossroads

A Special Series of 11 Independently Produced Films

A special series of 11 independently produced films, “America at a Crossroads,” comes to KUED-Channel 7 April 15-20. The documentaries explore the challenges confronting the world, including the war on terrorism; the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan; the experience of American troops; the struggle for balance within the Islamic world and Muslim life in America; and perspectives on America’s role globally. The distinguished journalist Robert MacNeil hosts the series.“’America at a Crossroads’ is unique in the history of broadcasting, given the amount of time dedicated to these issues and the diversity of films,” says KUED Broadcast Director Scott Chaffin. “Combined with an extensive outreach program, our goal is to contribute to a dialogue about our country’s policies and priorities while providing riveting — and often disturbing — glimpses into some of the most important public policy issues of our times.”“These independently produced documentaries speak in distinct voices about the challenges we face as a nation,” said John Boland, PBS Chief Content Officer. “The depth and perspectives of the programming — and the diversity of the issues and voices explored — serve as a fresh lens on some of the most challenging complexities of our time.”Produced by public television station and independent documentary filmmakers around the world, episodes include “Jihad: The Men and Ideas Behind Al Qaeda,” (Sunday, April 15, at 8 p.m.) “Warriors,” (Monday, April 16, at 8 p.m.) “Operation Homecoming: Writing the Wartime Experience,” (Monday, April 16, at 9 p.m.) “Gangs of Iraq,” (Tuesday, April 17, at 8 p.m.) “The Case for War: In Defense of Freedom,” (Tuesday, April 17, at 9 p.m.) “Europe’s 9/11,” (Wednesday, April 18, at 8 p.m.) “The Muslim Americans,” (Wednesday, April 18, at 9 p.m.) “Faith without Fear,” (Thursday, April 19, at 8 p.m.) “Struggle for the Soul of Islam: Inside Indonesia,” (Thursday, April 19, at 9 p.m.) “Security Versus Liberty: The Other War,” (Friday, April 20, at 8 p.m.) and “The Brotherhood” (Friday, April 20, at 9 p.m.) KUED is hosting a free public forum Tuesday, April 17, at 7:00 p.m. at The City Library, in conjunction with The University of Utah Hinckley Institute of Politics, the Middle East Center, and the Utah Council for Citizen Diplomacy.
