Six of Utah’s top teachers and two outstanding volunteers have been selected to receive the 2007 Golden Apple Award for Excellence in Education, presented by the Utah PTA and KUED Public Television. The Utah PTA Golden Apple Awards, now in its 17th year, premieres on KUED-Channel 7 Thursday, May 31, at 9 p.m. and repeats Sunday, June 3, at 1 p.m.
This special program features the awards ceremony, in combination with on-site footage shot in the recipients’ schools. The 2007 teacher honorees include Cindy Durante, a Longview Elementary teacher in the Murray School District; Scott Gregory, a math teacher at Olympus Junior High School in the Granite School District; Larry L. Larson, principal of North Cache 8/9 Center in the Cache County School District; Daren Lentz, a math teacher at Mount Logan Middle School in the Logan School District; Jon Winget, a seventh-grade teacher at Oak Canyon Junior High School in the Alpine School District; and Robert Turk, a teacher at Blanding Elementary School in the San Juan School District. The 2007 Outstanding Volunteer Awards will be presented to Julia Walker from Kaysville, Utah, and Sandy Whitehead from Pleasant Grove, Utah. Each Golden Apple Award recipient receives a $1,000 cash award and is honored at an awards ceremony and dinner on Tuesday, May 22, at KUED. Governor Jon Huntsman and First Lady Mary Kay Huntsman will be on hand to congratulate the winners.
