Live from the Lincoln Center features three long-time friends and renowned musicians - Itzhak Perlman, Emanuel Ax and Yo-Yo Ma performing Mendelssohn's beloved Piano Trios in addition to other favorite collaborations. Pianist Emanuel Ax captured public attention in 1974, when he won the Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Competition in Tel Aviv. Receiving a Grammy Award for his Haydn's piano sonatas, Ax has also made a series of Grammy-winning recordings with Ma of the Beethoven and Brahms sonatas for cello and piano.
Cellist Yo-Yo Ma maintains a balance between his engagements as a soloist with orchestras worldwide and his recital and chamber music activities. Today his discography encompasses more than 75 albums, including 16 Grammy Award winners.
Ma has received numerous awards, including the 1978 Avery Fisher Prize, the 1999 Glenn Gould Prize, the 2001 National Medal of Arts, the 2006 Sonning Prize, the 2006 Dan David Prize and the 2008 World Economic Forum's Crystal Award. In 2006, he was designated a United Nations Messenger of Peace by then Secretary-General Kofi Annan. In 2007, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon extended his appointment.
Violinist Itzhak Perlman enjoys superstar status rarely afforded a classical musician. He recently celebrated the 50th anniversary of his American debut, and was awarded a National Medal of Arts in 2000 and a Medal of Liberty in 1986.
Perlman, a Kennedy Center Honoree, performed at the 2007 state dinner for Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip at the White House. In addition to his many orchestral and recital appearances throughout the world, Perlman performs as conductor with leading orchestras, including the Berliner Philharmoniker, the London Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony and the New York Philharmonic. Perlman is the recipient of four Emmys and 15 Grammys.
