PlayhouseSquare and Ideastream, who brought us a peek behind the curtains of "A Chorus Line," now present the two-hour special "Backstage With: Mary Poppins." The Broadway version of the musical, produced by British impresario Cameron Mackintosh and Disney Theatrical Group, airs Monday, March 14 at 7:00 p.m. on KUED Channel 7.
The show brings together National Public Radio's "Weekend Edition" host, Scott Simon, and some of Disney's and Broadway's most powerful figures including: Thomas Schumacher, president of Disney Theatricals; Richard Sherman, who with his brother, Robert, wrote the songs for the 1964 Julie Andrews-Dick Van Dyke film version; Anthony Drewe and George Stiles, the British songwriting team who wrote the music for the stage version; Ashley Brown and Gavin Lee, who originated the roles of Mary Poppins and Bert in the Broadway stage version (2006).
The show is full of touching moments, including Sherman's memory of playing Walt Disney's favorite song, "Feed the Birds," at a dedication to Disney after his death.
