KUED Public Television will receive national recognition this month as PBS stations across the country broadcast the award-winning documentary Desert Wars: Water and the West, produced by John Howe.
In addition to receiving first-place honors in the television documentary category from the Utah Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, the documentary received top awards at this year's Houston WorldFest Film Festival, one of the largest and most competitive international film festivals.
Scheduled to air nationally Monday, July 18, Desert Wars: Water and the West airs locally on KUED-Channel 7 that same evening at 9 p.m. The documentary explores pressing water issues by looking at the conflicts surrounding the future of the Snake Valley groundwater aquifer in Nevada and Utah's west desert and at efforts to tap it for Las Vegas, Nevada.
Ranchers and farmers in small towns like Callao and Partoun, Utah, and Baker, Nevada, depend on the aquifer for their way of life. Las Vegas, one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, wants part of this water to support its burgeoning growth. Proposed groundwater pipelines flowing to Las Vegas could possibly affect not just small towns and ranching communities but also Great Basin National Park, Fish Springs National Wildlife Refuge, and endangered species.
KUED takes an extraordinary look at the complex battle for the resource that will control the future of the West.
