The Tao Te Ching, attributed to the Chinese philosopher Lao Tzu, has been called “the wisest book ever written.” Composed of 81 short verses, it is a book of wisdom that, next to the Bible, is the world’s most translated classic. This ancient discourse on the nature of existence continues to be a valuable resource for achieving a way of life that guarantees integrity, joy, peace and balance.
DR. WAYNE DYER: CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS, CHANGE YOUR LIFE, airing several times in August on KUED, is author Wayne Dyer’s newest PBS special, based on his one-year immersion in the study of the Tao Te Ching, or Great Way, which was probably written in the sixth century B.C. Dr. Dyer offers a presentation that speaks to life in the 21st century. His interpretation of the verses continues the tradition of the Tao as a handbook that has helped millions of people find peace while living through turbulent times. In the course of the program, Dr. Dyer encourages viewers to see these verses and ideas as insights into life and nature. Dr. Dyer explains that through attending to the ideas of the Tao, it is possible to change our thoughts on some of the most profound questions and issues confronting us today — and that, in changing those thoughts, our lives will be transformed by a sense of great peace and harmony. He focuses on six overall “thought transitions,” including how to change your thoughts from:· “I don’t trust my own nature” to “I trust my own nature”; learn how to retrain your ego.
· “I need more” to “I am living contentment”; learn how to detach from your “stuff.”
· “Thinking big” to “thinking small and achieving great things”; learn how to apply one of the most memorable lines of the Tao: “A journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”
Viewers will understand how, by comprehending and emulating the qualities of water, they can change from “being rigid, certain and demanding” to being “flowing and allowing, humble and soft” and bring about the dramatic achievement of living an unhurried life. He quotes Tao verse 78: “Nothing in the world is softer and weaker than water/But for attacking the hard, the unyielding/Nothing can surpass it.” Dr. Dyer explains this concept, which may be counterintuitive to Western minds: The softer you are, the less rigid you are; the more flexible you are as a person, the more you can accomplish. In his masterful teaching style, Dyer provides tangible “take-aways” for practicing this concept. As always, all the ideas are enhanced with Dr. Dyer’s signature humor, memorable stories and thought-provoking imagery.A special guest appearance by acclaimed Norwegian singer Cecilia highlights the final act, when she performs “Amazing Grace,” accompanied by the songs of the whales.
DR. WAYNE DYER: CHANGE YOUR THOUGHTS, CHANGE YOUR LIFE was taped in May 2007 at the California Center for the Arts in Escondido, in the intimate setting of the 400-seat, sold-out theater. The set evokes a meditation garden, complete with a pond and fountain.
Dr. Wayne Dyer: Change Your Thoughts, Change Your Life airs Saturday, August 4, at 1 p.m.; Sunday, August 5, at 8 p.m.; Monday, August 6, at 7 p.m.; Sunday, August 12, at 9 a.m.###
