Doc Martin Returns to KUED with New Season

Doc Martin Season 6
Airdate:
Saturday, February 1, 2014 - 8:00pm
This month, Doc Martin will be making another house call to Utah audiences with a new season.

The abrasive, yet brilliant and successful, Dr. Martin Ellingham is back in eight new episodes for the sixth season of Doc Martin beginning Saturday, February 1 at 8:00 p.m.  Stars Martin Clunes and Caroline Catz return, alongside Dame Eileen Atkins, Ian McNeice, and John Marquez.

Doc Martin was formerly a successful surgeon in London before a blood phobia  drove him to his current position as GP in the sleepy Cornish village of Portwenn in the West of England. With a deadpan face and no apparent people skills, Martin is not well equipped to deal with the eccentric inhabitants. One wonders how the long-suffering Louise manages to put up with him, but clearly she does as the series opens with them preparing at last for their wedding. However, as might be expected, things run far from smoothly.

As in the last series, childcare arrangements for Baby James are an ongoing issue. This time the Doc falls out with the regular nanny, and her temporary replacement does not prove to be entirely satisfactory.

Factor in the Doc’s usual string of batty patients—including a hypochondriac, a hoarder, two elderly tattoo artists, and a bumbling constable with a string of self-inflicted injuries—and Martin is soon more ill-tempered than ever.

Plus, his crippling blood phobia is back, and his ghastly mother (Claire Bloom) picks a bad time to show up. With much at stake, Martin turns for advice to his aunt Ruth (Emmy-winner Eileen Atkins), perhaps the sanest person in Portwenn.

“I’m thrilled to be going back to the beautiful North Cornish coast to shoot series six of Doc Martin,” Martin Clunes said when the new series was announced. “Our challenge this season will be to force Louisa and the doctor to live together with Baby James, which as far as I can see has disaster written all over it…”

Slate calls the series “Sweet, stirring, and completely addictive” while the U.K.’s Sunday Express calls it “One of the funniest, most entertaining shows on television.”
