Mr. Selfridge, the series that The Wall Street Journal calls “addicting,” returns with 10 new episodes in Season 2, premiering Sunday, March 30 at 8:00 p.m. on Masterpiece Classic on KUED. Three-time Emmy® winner Jeremy Piven reprises his role as Harry Gordon Selfridge, London’s retail king.
Last season began in 1909 London at the unfashionable end of Oxford Street with American retail tycoon, Harry Gordon Selfridge arriving to jettison British tradition and open one of the finest department stores the world has ever seen: Selfridges. The flamboyant entrepreneur and showman wanted to provide London's shoppers with the ultimate merchandise and the ultimate thrill.
The 10 new episodes in Season 2, pick up the story in 1914 as the store celebrates its fifth anniversary. While Harry is understandably proud of the success of Selfridges, he has no time to rest on his laurels. With war in Europe imminent, Harry prepares his staff for challenging times ahead. The store must play its own part in the war effort and help keep morale high on the home front. The war plays an integral part in the storyline of Mr. Selfridge Season 2, as it will have a big effect on the lives of everyone in the store.
Returning in the new season are Frances O’Connor (Madame Bovary) as Harry's loyal wife, Rose; Grégory Fitoussi (Spiral) as the mercurial window designer extraordinaire, Henri Leclair; and Aisling Loftus (Case Histories) as the spunky shop girl Agnes Towler. Several new characters will be added to the mix in Season 2, including the flamboyant new Head of Fashion, Mr. Thackeray (Cal Macaninch of Downtown Abbey).
Following the departure of Harry’s wife Rose at the end of Season 1, Harry has become accustomed to the life of a single man in London. But when she returns to British shores to celebrate the fifth anniversary, Harry is determined to win back her affection.
Emmy® Award-winning writer Andrew Davies (Pride and Prejudice, Bleak House) conjures the opulence and excitement of Selfridges and the story of its founder -- a man of exuberant, outsized, and potentially dangerous appetite. Behind Selfridges' lavish shop windows, gleaming counters, and majestic doors, appetite intersects with ambition and desire not just for Harry, but for his staff, his family, and the various women drawn to the store and the man.
