KUED and The Salt Lake Tribune Present the 2014 Teacher Innovation Award Winners
With technology being such an integral part of modern life, more and more teachers are finding increasingly innovative ways to use digital tools to help students learn. KUED celebrates these teachers with its first annual Teacher Innovation Awards.
The KUED Teacher Innovation Awards, a half-hour program profiling those teachers in their classrooms, will air Thursday, May 29 at 7:00 p.m. on KUED. The winning teachers include: Roger Haglund, eighth grade math teacher from Salt Lake School District; Shon Feller, high school arts teacher from Davis School District; Amber Palmer, fifth grade social studies teacher from Granite School District; Nicole Reitz-Larsen, high school science teacher from Salt Lake School District; and, Tami Ewell, ninth grade reading and language arts teacher from Jordan School District.
The broadcast program also includes brief interviews with education experts who talk about the importance of using technology in the classroom. They include: Robert Austin, Education Specialist, Utah State Office of Education; Larry Madden, Principal, Salt Lake Center for Science Education; Dr. Susan Madsen, Professor of Management, Woodbury School of Business at Utah Valley University; and, Kasandra VerBrugghen, Executive Director of Spy Hop Productions.
The five winning teachers from grades PreK-12 were selected by an outside panel of 10 judges representing organizations including the Utah State Office of Education, Utah Valley University, and The City Library. After reviewing the nominations, judges said they were overwhelmed by the passion, engagement, and innovation taking place in Utah classrooms.
“The television special shows how the teachers use technology to engage their students and to provide them with unique opportunities that facilitate learning, collaboration, digital literacy, critical thinking, and problem-solving that will help students thrive in today's world,” says KUED Education Coordinator Elise Peterson. “Students in these teachers’ classrooms are able to demonstrate the three R’s, but also the three Cs: creativity, communication, and collaboration—all through digital literacy.”
In addition, she says, learning which takes place in these classrooms is student driven, enhanced by media and technology. “These teachers are trying something new, infusing passion into learning, tapping into students' ideas, and utilizing technologies and digital media to improve students’ learning,” she says.
