KUED Kids, Head Start, Peg + Cat Celebrate 100th Day of School in Wendover
Tuesday, April 1, 2014 - 12:00pm
Special to the Wendover Times -- KUED Kids and the Salt Lake Community Action Program - Head Start will bring the “100th Day of School Celebration” to parents and children in Wendover, Utah on Tuesday, April 1 at the Head Start classroom site, 131 Wildcat Boulevard.
The celebration features the PBS Kids program Peg + Cat, which inspires preschool children to see math as exciting, accessible, and fun. To acquaint parents and children with the program and the educational resources available from PBS Kids, KUED will bring the Cleone Peterson Eccles Mobile Education Lab, featuring iPads and Kindles loaded with PBS Kids educational games and apps.
Three PBS Kids Media Lab Kindles will remain at the Head Start so that parents and children will be able to access educational apps and games through PBS Kids year round. The Peg + Cat 100th Day of School PBS KIDS Media Labs are provided as part of the CPB-PBS Ready To Learn Initiative and are funded by the U.S. Department of Education.
The 100th Day of School Celebration will feature activities for Head Start parents and children, including a Peg + Cat photo booth, counting games, bandana decorating, dinner for the whole family, and a free book for each Head Start child to take home.
“KUED’s Ready To Learn initiative provides programs, activities, and resources for Utah communities to increase parent and educator involvement in children’s literacy, development,” says KUED Education Coordinator Elise Peterson. “The program’s goal is to create a lifelong focus on learning from pre-K through adult. We’re very excited to be bringing The 100th Day of School Celebration to Wendover.”
Ready To Learn uses award-winning PBS Kids programs as a springboard to bolster children’s literacy and STEM education. “The program also distributes free books to children and communities in need, which strengthens families and increases library usage,” says Peterson.
Head Start provides a developmentally appropriate education to children who otherwise would not have the opportunity to be prepared for kindergarten. Head Start children obtain educational outcomes in language, literacy, numeracy, science, and social development.
