Meet the Harbor Seal Who Proved You Can Always Go Home Again
The Seal Who Came Home tells the amazing story of the 26-year relationship between Maine harbormaster Harry Goodridge and Andre, the seal pup he rescued. Harry found the abandoned Andre when he was only a few days old and decided to bring the seal pup home to nurse him back to health. It was the start of a special bond between Andre and and his rescuer, who the seal looked at as his "mother." Their touching story airs as the final episode of My Wild Affair, Wednesday, August 6 at 7:00 p.m. on KUED.
Harry raised Andre, bringing him into the Goodridge family home, where he could be found sitting near the dinner table at mealtime. Andre was as comfortable in the Goodridge home as he was in Penobscot Bay. When Harry started teaching him to do tricks, Rockport tourists flocked to see the seal, who became something of a local celebrity.
Although Andre spent much of his younger years in a floating enclosure Harry crafted, the pen was always left open so the seal could come and go as he pleased. Andre always came home. Year after year, he swam south in the winter, only to return again to Harry the next spring.
When Andre became too big to stay in the harbor, Harry decided he would live in an aquarium. Andre lived peacefully in his new home. Sadly, in the summer of 1986 Andre didn't return home. In July of that year, he was found dead and laid to rest by his trainer and friend Harry Goodridge.
