  In 1896, the U.S. Army transferred the Twenty-fourth Infantry to Fort Douglas in Salt Lake City, Utah. This marked the first time the army had stationed an African-American unit within a predominantly white population. Response to the transfer of the unit comprised of African-American soldiers was divided.
