The Campaign to Save Joe Hill
Virginia Snow Stephen, daughter of a past leader of the Mormon Church and an art instructor at the University of Utah, launched a campaign to save Joe Hill from execution after his conviction on a murder charge in 1914. This telegram to the present day equivalent of a Swedish Ambassador to the United States triggered a series of events that catapulted the case of Joe Hill to international prominence. Stephen would pay a dear price for her activisim. She was released from her position with the University amid a swirl of community controversy accusing faculty members of radical affiliations. She moved to California, where she would remain an adamant socialist for the rest of her life.
