Solidarity: the National Campaign
Led by the spirited and strident editorials of the Industrial Workers of the World newspaper, Solidarity, the movement to block the execution of Joe Hill picked up steam in the fall of 1915. Printed in the hundreds of thousands, leaflets were scattered throughout the nation urging workers to raise their voice in protest to the looming execution. Hill is routinely portrayed in the leaflets, broadsides and posters as the fearless voice of the working class set to be martyred through a vast conspiracy of business, government and/or religion.
