Marjorie L. Fox, Chaplain/Social Worker
I have worked as a social worker for hospice for 13 years. The experience
I have had with hospice has been quite rewarding. It has also been a sincere
privilege to work with the clients and families with whom I have come
into contact.
My experience with end of life care started 17 years ago. While mentoring
a young girl who wanted to go into the field of nursing, we visited a
local hospital. While touring through the hospital, I overheard a social
worker talking to a young couple, telling them that their young child,
who had been brought into the hospital, was going to die. The social
worker, with such love and compassion, extended his hand in a gesture
of true caring. As I listened, I felt to some extent, the gravity of their
loss. My heart filled with compassion and love for this family and their
social worker. In my mind, I knew my journey in life would now be directed
towards the loving, gentle care of hospice.
My goal as a hospice social worker has been to focus on the well being
of all those I come in contact with. I want to help people understand
and cope with the challenges associated with the living and dying process.
I believe that dying is a natural part of life that can become a growth
experience for all involved through exploration, compassion, and love.
