Musical traditions from Polynesia don't always involve drumming! Christian missionaries to Polynesia in the nineteenth century introduced the then popular military marching band style of music to the Islands. The harmonic structure and instrumentation of brass bands adapted and blended beautifully with the more traditional style of Polynesian community performance. Today several Salt Lake City based Polynesian brass bands join parades, festivals and concerts throughout Utah and the region.
