Along with snow or maybe polygamy, Utah's liquor laws are right up there with the characteristics outsiders associate with the state. But have you ever wondered where they came from or how we got to this point?
This week on Utah NOW we're talking about the history and logic of Utah's liquor laws and the current effort to reform them.
I moved to Logan, UT from Florida 3 months ago and have tried to hold on to my traditional custom of a beer or wine with dinner out. It is the law in most the worlds pizza joints that beer must be consumed with the main course in order to cut through the cheese. I wish now I could enjoy life with all its natural pleasures in food and drink without the bar-police interference. Whoever passed the Utah system of anti-EtOH laws must have had a bad hangover - or ate bad cheese.
I find Utah's EtOH regulatory laws ridiculous and often face prying questions and silly rules, exorbitant prices, taxes and drinkclub charges. I mistakenly thought Utah is where civil liberty and freedoms are generally upheld. Not here...pilgrim. Tourists stay out of the State unless you like Rootbeer or Pepsi with dinner!
Only in Utah where one is harassed by bar-police for a drink club membership before being served. However, where it's - "Shockingly OK" to carry a handgun, even to a college classroom. Please Utah - take away my handgun and give me my beer.

I enjoyed the piece about Utah's liquor laws. Just as Dave (Piper Down Pub) recounted, when I tell people my son owns a pub in Salt Lake City I often get into a discussion about the curious liquor laws in the state of Utah. They should just make it simple! No memberships, serve drinks as they were designed to be mixed, enforce the drunk driving and public intoxication laws and don't make the bar tenders the conscience of the patron. And Dave, judging by the bags under your eyes, you need to get more sleep. Love, Mom.
