Utah's African-American Voices

A slave born in North Carolina in 1837, Alex Bankhead came West with other slaves of the Bankhead family, who lived in Salt Lake City and Wellsville, Utah. Alex Bankhead was later sold to A.O. Smoot of Provo, Utah. He is seen here tying broom corn in the William Jex broom factory of Spanish Fork, Utah.
