Utah's African-American Voices




One of the first African-Americans to settle in the Salt Lake Valley, Green Flake was the slave of James Madison Flake, a Southern convert to the LDS Church.

His master was later killed and, by 1854, Brigham Young had given Green Flake his freedom.
