Social work has historically sought to prove itself as a profession with a defined body of knowledge and expert techniques. But
one of social work’s most defining features is its value base. This talk will celebrate social work as a profession rooted
in values of social justice, human dignity, and the call to advocate for and with marginalized or oppressed people and
communities. This presentation describes the work of three social workers from the fields of child welfare, community organizing,
and court-based prostitution diversion, whose practices are informed by quintessentially social work values to argue that the
profession should embrace and promote itself as a profession of social justice.
Corey Shdaimah, LLM, PhD, is an
assistant professor at the University of Maryland School of Social Work with degrees in law and social work.
