Episode: Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Featuring Alfie Boe and Tom Brokaw
Tony Award-winning tenor Alfie Boe and internationally-renowned veteran newscaster Tom Brokaw join the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square in a concert of holiday favorites and inspiring surprises. Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Featuring Alfie Boe and Tom Brokaw airs on KUED Thursday, December 5 at 7:00 p.m. with repeats Sunday, December 8 at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, December 10 at 7:00 p.m., and Tuesday, December 24 at 8:00 p.m.
Hailed by The Salt Lake Tribune as “[the year that] may have topped them all,” Christmas with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir Featuring Alfie Boe and Tom Brokaw is a majestic and moving holiday concert.
Among the highlights is Boe's stirring signature performance of "Bring Him Home" from Les Misérables, made all the more poignant because the concert was taped the same day as the shootings in Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut.
As a surprise guest, the Choir welcomes Gail “Hal” Halvorsen, the American “candy bomber” who dropped gum and chocolate for German children during the Berlin Airlift of 1948-49. As Brokaw introduces Halvorsen following a dramatic reading of the story of the “candy bomber,” the audience jumps to its feet. Halvorsen, a Utah native and U.S. Air Force pilot, then 92, appears in his original 1948 flight suit surrounded by a crowd of children dressed in 1940s style costumes as hundreds of pieces of candy attached to handkerchief parachutes fall from the ceiling.
Together with the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square, Brokaw, Boe, and Halvorsen brought an unprecedented excitement to the stage that brought the live concert audience to its feet more than once. The concert was taped in December of 2012 at the LDS Conference Center in Salt Lake City before combined audiences of 80,000 people.
Also included on the program are seasonal favorites “Jingle Bells,” “Hark! The Herald Angels Sing,” a Christmas medley including “(There’s No Place like) Home for the Holidays,” “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” and “Somewhere in My Memory,” and the signature finale, “Angels, from the Realms of Glory.”
