The Roots of 'Ulu will transport the viewer from the Polynesian voyaging canoes that brought 'ulu from Tahiti to Hawai'i, up through the present day efforts of native practitioners, medical specialists and agricultural experts who have a shared vision of the 'ulu (breadfruit) tree playing an important role in cultural preservation, health restoration and food sustainability for Hawai'i's future. The Roots of 'Ulu is a recipient of R&D, Production, and Completion funding from PIC's Media Fund.
This renowned painter Harry Somers endured an incredible trauma and is now suffering from a terminal illness. In this portrait of the successful impressionist painter, Harry talks about growing up in Zweibruecken, Germany, in the shadows of the Nazi Socialist Party, escaping on a Kindertransport to Australia, and losing almost every relative to the death camps of the Holocaust. More than anything, Harry talks about the beauty of life, hope, survival, forgiveness and about the best frankfurter he ever had in his life.
