Jesus: Countdown to Calvary
Not many fans of Downton Abbey know that Hugh Bonneville (who played Lord Grantham) is a theological scholar who graduated in theology from Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. He returns to public television this month to host an examination of the events leading up to the execution of Jesus of Nazareth by the Roman government.
Jesus: Countdown to Calvary airs twice on KUED leading up to Easter Sunday. The special will be broadcast Sunday, March 25 at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday, March 31 at 9:00 p.m.
Regardless of one's religious beliefs, there is no denying the impact Jesus of Nazareth has had on world history, particularly the events surrounding his death. Bonneville travels to Jerusalem in search of answers. Meeting with academic experts and spiritual leaders, Bonneville deconstructs the week leading up to Jesus's death and untangles the complex factors that resulted in his crucifixion.
The documentary is framed as a high-stakes political thriller, a clock counting down each critical moment from Palm Sunday to good Friday, revealing first-century Jerusalem as a hotbed of social, religious, and political agitation.
